Several members of the Newsboyz took a vacation during the first part of May. I filled this time with two weeks of Del Castillo tour dates. Del Castillo is probably my favorite original band at the moment and it was a rare opportunity to mix their live shows. I had done some shows last year in Ohio and Michigan, but this was more shows and all of them were in Texas. I would love to be their full-time sound engineer, but I have too much going on here in Austin and I have a family that wouldn't be too happy to have me driving around all over the country.David Garza was the opening act for most of these shows. Although he is a solo act, he had various members of Del Castillo (both band and crew) sit in on various "jams". A good time was had by all.
Here are a series of photo galleries I took while out on the road:
Harpoon Harry's at College Station, TX
Lakewood Theatre, Dallas, TX
Cinco de Mayo at The Glenn, Austin, TX 05-05-2007

Dos Amigos Cantina, Odessa, TX
Steelpenny Pub, San Angelo, TX (sorry, no photos)

I did a "major overhall" of The Newsboyz web site by changing a few lines of code to change the color scheme, background photos, etc. and built a new 3D background by "virtually" photographing a collage inside a 3D modeling program after lighting the scen with virtual lights. I even applied a simulated depth of field effect by gradually blurring the image as you move away from the center focal point. Here's a link to the background by itself:

I finally mixed and mastered audio clips for The Newz that I recorded back in October of 2006 at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden in Austin. The Newz consists of three members of The Newsboyz. They often perform as an acoustic trio before full band performances at wedding receptions and other private parties. Because the performance was outdoors and there was no wind, I was able to get almost perfect separation between the different tracks.I recorded The Newz, as well as The Newzboyz using my notebook computer, an external firewire hardrive, and an RME Fireface800 interface with two additional RME Octamic-D mic pre's. I used Cakewalk Sonar 6.0PE as the recording software.
The audio clips for The Newz and The Newsboyz are on these pages:

I mixed The Sophisticates for the Georgetown Area Community Foundation's Triple Crown Gala 2006 on Saturday. This was a new event for both myself and The Sophisticates. The band played a long set, followed by a live auction, and then played another long set. The food was good and the dance floor was packed while the band played. A good time was had by all, as the cliche goes. Here are photos from the event that I put on The Sophisticates web site:
