I photographed KLBJ 590 AM's "Talk Fest 2008" at the Austin Convention Center. The event showcased many of the live talkshow hosts featured on KLBJ 590 AM, including Coast to Coast AM's George Noory and Austin's own Alex Jones
I mixed The Newsboyz at the Duck Tavern in Temple, TX, Friday night. This was a new venue for us. The people were very friendly and I look forward to going back soon.
I mixed Sprung at Cool River Cafe last night; my home away from home. It was a great show with a great crowd (as usual). The pace is somewhat less rigorous in January for live gigs and I was greatfull to be able to keep rockin' through the month.
I mixed Sprung at Speakeasy last night. Speakeasy is a cool place, but it isn't my favorite place to mix, since the mix position is in a "crow's nest" up a 15 foot ladder. I have a "block and tackle" rig I made with pulleys and rope from my kid's treehouse that I use to hoist my FX rack and some other stuff up into the little "booth in the sky". I managed to drop my expensive reference mic that I use with my acoustic analyzer program that will cost me a pretty penny to have repaired - oh well...
The Newsboyz performed for Austin Social Scene's NYE party at the Crowne Plaza. I mixed the sound and shot a bunch of photos. Our friend's, Vallejo, alternated sets on the same stage. My old buddies, The Daddios, played down the hall.
I did the live audio mix and recording feed for the Century Management Client Conference at the Austin Hilton. AiM Productions was doing the video porduction and they subbed me out to do the audio tasks. I also rented them my Canon XL2 video camera. There were a total of five video cameras that fed two large rear projection screens on each side of the stage. Each camera also recorded to tape for later editing into a DVD that will be distributed to Century Management Clients. I will be doing this same event in Houston later in June.
This last Saturday I provided audio production for the wedding of Krista Dabney to Bobby Dillard at AMOA Laguna Gloria. I provided a larger sound system for The Iguanas under the large dinner and dancing tent as well as smaller systems for the wedding ceremony and cocktail hour entertainment. Tosca Strings and Topas played for both these segments.
Several members of the Newsboyz took a vacation during the first part of May. I filled this time with two weeks of Del Castillo tour dates. Del Castillo is probably my favorite original band at the moment and it was a rare opportunity to mix their live shows. I had done some shows last year in Ohio and Michigan, but this was more shows and all of them were in Texas. I would love to be their full-time sound engineer, but I have too much going on here in Austin and I have a family that wouldn't be too happy to have me driving around all over the country.
